Governor Bill Richardson Sets Special Session Date for Oct. 17
SANTA FE – Governor Bill Richardson, following a meeting with legislative leaders today, said he will call the Legislature into a Special Session starting Oct. 17 to deal with the budget shortfall caused by the national recession.
Governor Richardson met this morning with a working group of legislative leaders to discuss ideas for closing the budget gap. Governor Richardson presented a plan to legislators on Sept. 1 to deal with the shortfall, while keeping education funding intact. Legislators said they will respond with their plan by the end of this week.
“After meeting with education leaders, I am more convinced than ever that we must fight against attempts to cut school spending,” said Governor Richardson, who met with several school superintendents on Friday. “The superintendents reiterated their strong opposition to drastic cuts that some legislators have proposed.”
The special session will start on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon. The budget will be the only issue on the agenda, which the Governor sets. The Governor and legislative leaders agreed that they will not consider any attempts to increase taxes.
The length of the session will be dependent on how long it takes to reach a consensus on the budget.
