The Right Kind of Political Power! AFSCME PEOPLE Convention Wrap-Up

On Saturday, June 3rd, in Albuquerque, nearly 70 AFSCME political activists from around the state gathered for the biennial Council 18 PEOPLE Convention.  Special thanks to Int’l Secretary-Treasurer Elissa McBride for joining us for the day. We are extremely grateful in New Mexico to have the support of President Lee Saunders and Secretary-Treasurer McBride as we maneuver through these difficult times and the constant attacks on workers and the services our members provide.

Congratulations to Local 624 Executive Board members, Lawrence Romero and Louis Montoya for their dedication to workplace organizing.  Lawrence and Louis were presented with certificates of recognition for their recruitment of new MVP PEOPLE members in 2017. We were also excited to recognize House Majority Leader Dr. Sheryl Williams Stapleton, Senator Linda Lopez, and Albuquerque City Councilor Diane Gibson for their dedication and commitment to our state and to working families.  Each of them has proven time and time again that they will always stand up for labor and will always fight to protect the workers of our great state.

AFSCME Council 18 President Casey Padilla hands Local 624 Steward and City of Albuquerque Solid Waste Department Laborer, Lawrence Romero, his certificate for outstanding union activism in organizing his workplace and taking action on the safety issues affecting his co-workers.
And finally, big round of applause for our next Statewide PEOPLE Steering Committee.  Our union is run by the members, for the members.  The following group of leaders will undoubtedly do a fantastic job representing Council 18 over the next two years.  The new PEOPLE Committee is as follows:
