About Us

WE ARE AFSCME

Our Mission: UNITED, we work to protect our jobs and the services we provide, improve pay, benefits, safety, and fairness at work.

America’s communities never rest. Streets need cleaning. Families need care. Students deserve well-run schools, and our neighborhoods demand safety. That’s why people who work in public service never stop. This isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. The work matters because it means something to make a community better.

AFSCME believes that every person working to sustain their community deserves respect. As part of the AFL-CIO, AFSCME is one of the nation’s leading advocates for working women and men. Our 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen, and we believe everyone deserves a chance to fulfill the American dream.

AFSCME is the union that honors solidarity without conformity, drawing each member’s story into a force of experience and commitment that can’t be ignored. That’s how we win better lives for ourselves, our families, and our communities. For people proudly committed to public service, we never quit.

Colorado's public service employees are one of the state's most valuable resources. We safeguard and maintain our parks, public roads, and public buildings - from nurses to child care providers, sanitation workers, public safety, corrections and detention facilities, water and transportation systems - we form the backbone of an effective public service system that helps to promote opportunity and improve the lives of all Coloradans.

Council 18 is the umbrella organization that houses the various city, county, and state locals affiliated with the American Federation of State County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in Colorado.

AFSCME’s 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen with members in hundreds of different occupations — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.

In Colorado, Council 18 helps sustain communities throughout the state by representing workers at the bargaining table. We have consistently won improved wages, benefits, and working conditions for Colorado's public service employees.
